A Family History of Service to Conroe

Councilman Jay Ross Martin’s dad was born in Huntsville and moved to Conroe in 1947 upon marrying Ruby Laura Hooper whose family migrated here in the late 1800’s.

Councilman Jay Ross Martin’s mom, Ruby Laura, was born in Conroe, Texas and was the sole daughter of Hattie Bell and Guy Hooper.

Councilman Jay Ross Martin’s grandfather Guy H. Hooper was a prominent rancher in Montgomery County and along with his brother Dick Hooper helped discover the Conroe Oil Fields.

Guy H. Hooper was sheriff in Montgomery County in the early 1930’s.

Councilman Jay Ross Martin’s uncle, William “Bud” Hooper was County Clerk from 1953 to 1965.  He was on the Conroe City Council from 1970 to 1974.  He was Mayor of Conroe from 1975 to 1978 prior to retiring to his law practice and many other business ventures in Conroe.

Councilman Jay Ross Martin was married for 26 year to the late Sherry Box Martin who passed away in 2002 on the morning of his 1st scheduled Council meeting.

Councilman Jay Ross Martin has 1 daughter, Leslie Laura Martin who after graduation from U.T. opened a highly successful restaurant/coffeehouse in south Austin which she still owns today.

Councilman Jay Ross Martin is currently engaged to Ruthie Dalton and they plan to marry in early June.  Ruthie is a native of Conroe who graduated from Conroe High School in 1973 and is the proud mother of a 20 year old son Darren Dalton who has spent his last (2) two years at Texas A&M University.

Both the Hooper family and the Martin family have always been active in City and County politics and community affairs and Councilman Jay Ross Martin is intent on carrying on the tradition.
